The clinic was founded in 1946, shortly after World War II, by Dr. Robert Schindlbeck. The premises date back to 1918, when a so-called "villa" or country house was built in the heart of Herrsching, on the eastern shore of the Ammersee. It was previously occupied by a state secretary. The core structure has been the starting-point for all subsequent additions. The location is ideal for a clinic, as it lies in a beautifully situated spot on the Bay of Herrsching, blessed with good climate.
The founder Dr. Robert Schindlbeck (1911-1999) was a well-known internist who became famous for both his medical achievements and professional activities. From 1959 to 1977, he was President of the Internal Medicine Physicians of Bavaria. In 1960, he founded the Bavarian Internists Conference, and from 1963 to 1980 he was Vice-President of the German Internists Professional Association. In 1972, the German Doctors Professional Association honored him with the Ernst von Bergmann badge for his services rendered to advanced medical training, and in 1976 he was the recipient of the Bavarian Medal of Honor. Since 1977 he had been Honorary President of the Bavarian Internists Association and Honorary President of the Bavarian Internists Conference. The German Doctors Professional Association gave him the Günther Budelmann Medal in 1985 and it was a special honor for him to receive the Federal Order of Merit 1st Class from President Richard von Weizsäcker.
Having always the needs of the patients in mind, Dr. Robert Schindlbeck and Dr. Ullrich Schindlbeck created an interdisciplinary medical partnership practice in the clinic. Since then, eight internists with various specialties, two radiologists, one nuclear physician and a heart surgeon have established their offices here. The close collaboration between medical practices and clinics made the “integrated care” demanded by politicians (i.e. interlinking of inpatient and outpatient healthcare provisions) a reality many years ago.
Internist and gastroenterologist Dr. Michael Probst succeeded Dr. Schindlbeck as the clinic’s chief physician in 1986. He very successfully continued the institution’s tradition in the medical-humanitarian sense, pursued his commitment for the internists’ professional policy and the further education courses given at the clinic for the Starnberg County Medical Association, among others.
Dr. Ullrich Schindlbeck is also professionally active as board member of the German and Bavarian Internists Professional Associations.
The internist, cardiologist and intensive care physician Dr. Achim Rotter joined the clinic as Chief Physician in summer 2004. In his capacity as cardiologist and intensive care physician, he has so far performed more than 3000 cardiac catheterizations, some of them under an acute heart attack with balloon dilatation and stent implantation. Under his leadership, the clinic’s cardiac catheter laboratory opened its doors on Oct. 18, 2005. Thanks to its 24-hour service capability, a heart attack can be treated immediately by cardiac catheter examination at any time of the day and night. He brings to his job the long experience as Stroke Center Director to treat acute stroke cases. In addition, he is the regional representative of the German Stroke Help Center. After Dr. Michael Probst left his position of Chief Physician on Dec. 31, /2005, Dr. Peter Sautner succeeded him on Jan. 1, 2006 as the clinic’s new Chief Physician. Dr. Sautner had been very successfully active in the clinic since February 1991. Apart from his broad internist training, he has specialized in cardiology, including pacemaker diagnosis and therapy. Under his leadership, automatic defibrillators (ICD) have been implanted together with cardiac surgeon Prof. Wenke since January 2007.
Both chief physicians are in charge of the further medical education program for the entire field of internal medicine. In 2007, it was possible to attract Dr. Martin Brennenstuhl, an internist and gastroenterologist with many years of experience, especially in the fields of interventional endoscopy and endosonography, so the specialization of gastroenterology is now fully covered.
