Cardiology, Cardiac catheter

We are specialized in the diagnosis and therapy of diseases of the coronary arteries, the heart muscle, cardiac rhythm and cardiac valves, as well as circulatory diseases (strokes, leg angiopathies).

The following procedures are available for diagnostic and therapeutic treatment:

  • Heart catheter laboratory with full diagnostic capabilities for heart
muscle, coronary artery, and heart valve diseases as well as PTCA (balloon dilatation) and stent implantation in chronic coronary artery stenoses and acute heart attacks. Right-heart catheter for measuring cardiac minute output and the pressure values in the lesser circulatory system
  • Rest, stress and long-term ECG
  • Examination of cardiac and pulmonary capacity (spiroergometry)
  • Monitoring and "cardio call"
  • 24-hour blood pressure measurement
  • 24-hour long-term ECG
  • Tilting table examination
  • Echocardiography with color Doppler (cardiac ultrasound examination)
  • Echocardiography of the heart through the esophagus (TEE)
  • Stress echocardiography
  • Implantation and control of one- and two-chamber pacemaker systems,
    including frequency-adaptive systems
  • Implantation and follow-up care of defibrillators (ICD)
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic atrial stimulation though transvenous
    or esophageal pacemaker probes
  • Right-heart catheter for measuring cardiac minute output and the
pressure values in the pulmonary circulatory system
  • Nuclear cardiology (e.g.,  gated myocardial SPECT)
  • Vascular ultrasound with color Doppler and duplex
  • Angiographies (DSA, CT, and MRI angiography)
  • Cardiac CT with coronary artery imaging
  • Cardio-MRI

Blood flow disorders in the heart, brain and limbs are very common, and for this reason our goal is to recognize and treat the most important risk factors such as metabolic disorders, high blood pressure and diabetes on a preventative basis.

Our state-of-the-art diagnostic examination technology enables us to identify and therapy early stages of vascular disease in the regions of the coronary arteries and the peripheral vessels and those that supply the brain.

In case of an acute heart attack or stroke, the prospects of surviving the event are increasingly better owing to the therapeutic procedures used in modern intensive care medicine. For example, cardiac rhythm disorders are treated and corrected with suitable medication and pacemaker therapy, while strokes are treated with an early-onset of thrombolytic therapy. The essential 24-hour service needed to accomplish this includes a computer tomography of the brain carried out at the clinic.

An especially trained team of interdisciplinary specialists made up of internists, cardiologists and neurologists, as well as therapists from various fields (speech therapy, ergotherapy and physical medicine) care for their patients during the acute stage. In stroke treatment, the clinic applies telemedicine in its cooperation with the competent neurologists and neurosurgeons of the Augsburg Medical Center.

Cardiac catheter:

Since October 2005, the clinic has its own cardiac catheter laboratory that uses X-ray equipment for examining patients who suffer from heart muscle, heart valve and coronary artery diseases.

Depending on the individual case, the diagnosis is supplemented with right heart catheterization. The newest materials are employed while taking the patient’s well-being into account to accomplish the best possible examination outcome.

In the treatment of chronic stenosis or acute coronary artery obstructions (acute heart attack), all widely used therapeutic procedures such as balloon dilatation (PTCA) and stent implantations (including medication-releasing stents) are employed.

In an acute heart attack, every minute counts – in other words, the faster an obstructed coronary artery is opened, the lesser the damage done to the cardiac muscle and the higher the survival rate. The vessel is re-opened much more effectively with a balloon dilatation and stent implantation than with medications (clot-dissolving thrombolytics). Thus, starting on the 2nd quarter of 2006, the clinic offers 24-hour cardiac catheter examination service for acute heart attacks. Follow-up care takes place in the optimally equipped intensive care unit.

Heart operations are carried out in the medical practice of Prof. Dr. Wenke in cooperation with the Heart Surgery Department of the Großhadern Medical Center. Regarding the treatment of slow cardiac arrhythmias, mono and dual chamber pacemakers are regularly implanted.

Since January 2007, defibrillators (ICD) have been implanted to prevent sudden cardiac death caused by arrhythmias, whose diagnosis is planned by introducing electrophysiological examination to improve the planned stimulation of the heart. Owing to the increase in cases involving patients with chronic weak hearts (cardiasthenia), the introduction of resynchronization therapy (CRT) is in preparation.
