This department specializes in the diagnosis and therapy of the windpipe, bronchi, lung and pleura. Lung and bronchial diseases are very common, most of them being chronic diseases such as asthma, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Frequently, even patients with respiratory tract or lung infections need hospitalization. The close relationship between lung and heart makes the cooperation with cardiology and other sub-specializations of internal medicine a necessity.

The following examinations are carried out in the diagnostics of lung and bronchial diseases:

• Lung function measurement with determination of static and dynamic lung function parameters (body plethysmograph)
• Allergy and provocation testing
• Hyperventilation test
• Blood gas analysis under stress
• Catheterization of the pulmonary circulation
• Nuclear medicine
• Bronchoscopy with bronchial lavage
• Sleep apnea screeningVirtual bronchoscopy and automated detection of circular lung foci with CT

Therapy includes above all inhalation therapy and breathing exercises, as well as every common drug and physical therapy. Patients with a respiratory insufficiency receive long-term oxygen therapy.
