History

The clinic was founded in 1946 by Dr. med. Robert Schindlbeck during the post-war period. The origin of the clinic is the so-called “Villa” built in 1918 at the heart of Herrsching on the Eastern lakeshore of Ammersee. Initially inhabited by a state secretary it is the starting point of all further extensions. The location is considered ideal for a clinic since it is situated in a picturesque landscape and with regard to its climate in a preferred area at the bay of Herrsching.

The founder Dr. Robert Schindlbeck (1911- 1999) was a renowned specialist for internal medicine who had acquired an excellent reputation not only as a physician but also in the field of professional policy activities. From 1963 to 1980 he served as vice-president of the Professional Association of German Specialists for Internal Medicine (Berufsverband Deutscher Internisten). In 1972 he was awarded with the Ernst-von-Bergmann medal by the German Medical Association (Bundesärztekammer) for his merits in connection with further medical training; and in 1976 he was awarded with the Bavarian Order of Merit (Bayerischer Verdienstorden).

Since 1977 he served as honorary president of the Bavarian Association of Specialists for Internal Medicine (Bayerischer Internistenverbandes) and as honorary chairman of the Bavarian Association of Specialists for Internal Medicine (Bayerischer Internistenkongress). In 1985 he was awarded with the Günther-Budelmann medal by the Professional Association of German Specialists for Internal Medicine (Berufsverband Deutscher Internisten). Finally in 1988, as a very special honour, Dr. Robert Schindlbeck received the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class (Bundesverdienstkreuz Erster Klasse), by German Federal President Richard von Weizsäcker.

Bearing the needs of patients in mind, Dr. med. Robert Schindlbeck and Dr. med. Ullrich Schindlbeck set up an interdisciplinary group practice within the clinic. Meanwhile eight specialists for internal medicine with various focal points as well as two radiologists, one specialist for nuclear medicine and one cardiac surgeon established practices within the clinic. Due to the close cooperation between the practices and the clinic’s “integrated medical care”, as demanded by politics was realized already years ago which means a close interlinking between treatments of inhouse and ambulant patients.

1986 Dr. med. Michael Probst († 2nd April 2010), specialist for internal medicine and gastroenterology succeded Dr. Schindlbeck as medical director. He continued the tradition of the clinic in a medical-human sense, as well as in terms of commitment for professional policy activities of internal specialists and further training programs at the clinic, such as trainings of the Medical District Association of Starnberg (Ärztlicher Kreisverband Starnberg).

Dr. med. Ullrich Schindlbeck († 21. Mai 2012) was dedicated to professional policy activities too. He served as member of the higher-level management board of the Professional Association of German and Bavarian Internal Specialists (Berufsverband der Deutschen und Bayerischen Internisten).

Since summer 2004 Dr. med. Achim Rotter, specialist for internal medicine, cardiology and intensive care serves as medical director. As specialist for cardiology and intensive medicine up to date he performed more than 6000 cardiac catheter interventions, among others during acute cardia infarction via balloon dilatation and stent implantation. Under his leadership the cardiac catheter laboratory was put into operation at the clinic on 18th October 2005. By offering a 24-hour standby service an acute cardiac infarction can be treated without delay at any time of the day or night with cardiac catheter treatment. Acute stroke patients benefit from his longstanding experience as director of a stroke ward. Additionally Dr. Rotter serves as regional representative of the German Stroke Foundation (Deutsche Schlaganfallhilfe).

With the retirement of Dr. Michael Probst as medical director on 31.12.2005 Dr. med. Peter Sautner succeeded him as medical director of the clinic starting at 01.01.2006. Dr. Sautner had already been working successfully at the clinic since February 1991. Besides his broad education in internal medicine as cardiologist he primarily specializes in in the field of diagnostics and therapy of pacemakers. Under his leadership automatic defibrillators (ICD) are implanted in cooperation with cardiac surgeon Prof. Wenke since 2007. Both head physicians have the full license for further training for the whole field of internal medicine.

In 2007 Dr. med. Martin Brennenstuhl, a specialist in internal medicine and gastroenterology with longstanding experience, particularly within the field of interventional endoscopy and endosonography was enlisted thus covering the complete field of gastroenterology.
